“…One of my main responsibilities was to keep a close eye on hide’s overloaded schedule so that it wouldn’t impact his health. That is in other words, I had to do everything within my power to keep him from drinking excessively and making himself sick. To tell the truth I found myself putting forth a lot of effort, especially since back in those days even hide himself wished to cut down on his drinking.
Basically, hide had given me very strict instructions.
- Doesn’t matter if I’m still drinking, I’m asking that after a while you say we go home.
However as admirable as that was it only lasted as long as hide was sober.
Perhaps partially because of whom he was, when the time came to drink and get into long discussions of music hide would completely forget all about the instructions he himself had given.
Usually I would wait for the right moment, a good three hours after the drinking had begun, then would speak up tentatively. But if I alone spoke up I was right away at a disadvantage.
- Hide-san, it’s time we were on our way.
- It’s OK, not yet.
- Please don’t say that, we really should be going.
- Who the hell do you think you are?! Shut up!
However, hide’s blunt way of cutting me off was simply because he needed to stay with the drinking pace in order to keep up appearances in front of his drinking buddies. I gradually came to think that the better I became at bargaining.
Since hide would never voluntarily decide to go home, the next best thing was having me beg: “there’s always tomorrow, please think about going back.” Then hide would make me the bad guy and thus matter would be settled.
- What the hell. You ruined the mood asshole!
You see, at each such pointless argument the people around us would butt in to help me out.
- Hide-chan, let’s head back soon? Look, it’s not just Hiroshi-kun who says so.
- Ah, I see. Well what can ya do then, let’s go.” - (с) Hiroshi Matsumoto, “Kyoudai. Tsuioku no hide” book.

“…FC: So, you’re always going between your home and studio, aren’t you?
hide: Mostly I stay at home. I go to LBL only when I have to play in a loud voice
FC: So… Don’t you go to somewhere to have a good time?
hide: No. I even gave up drinking.
FC: Did you REALLY give up drinking?!?!
hide: Japanese sake only! Gave up nothing but Japanese sake!!” - (c) hide’s interview, X-press #23
Sorry. Awful English, I know (((
“…What about cigarettes?
I’m a super heavy smoker. Back in the day when I worked part time there definitely were times when I wasn’t allowed to smoke on the job but that’s not the case now.
When I’m recording in the studio, I smoke even more. I think about five, six packs a day?
Doesn’t that make you a chain smoker?
Yep. It’s an insane amount. But I never think about quitting.
Your throat doesn’t get sore?
It does. Plus it’s hard, you know, the times I catch a cold. And sometimes my lungs hurt. However……by now it’s been so long that I really don’t want to quit. And I do think that I’d gain weight if I did *laughs*. The rare times I catch a cold, and stop smoking for the duration, all I do is eat and eat. If I stopped smoking because of the pain in my lungs, or because I don’t enjoy the taste of cigarettes, I’d do nothing but eat instead.
You used to be overweight, am I correct?
Shut up *laughs*. But you see, if you were overweight at one point in time, the number of fat cells in your body will always stay the same after that, so the risk of gaining the weight back is extremely high. For people who were overweight just once in their life and then lost the weight, it’s a lifelong effort to keep the weight off. You can’t ever lose your focus. I’m not kidding you.
If you were told to give up either smoking or alcohol, which would you choose?
Alcohol, no doubt about that. I could give up drinking easily if I ever wanted to. Drinking is a pastime, smoking is a daily necessity. To me, cigarettes are more than just a luxury item, you know *laughs*. - (с) Interview with hide, from Shoxx #7, December 1991

Take me back to see the ocean
Bearing sound of waves devotion
Wash away the words corrosion
That we left behind
Clean me up with wind and water
I’m your son and you’re my daughter
I won’t let this moment be slaughtered
In my burning mind
And when I’m lost inside the walls
I’d live this moment more and more
So blind I can’t help it
Lost inside the walls
I need this moment more and more
So blind I can’t help it
Searching ways for understanding
I would lose my boat stranded
Now I know I was defending
Castle on a sand
Take me back to see the ocean
City’s draining my emotions
Let me have a healing potion
Sipping off your hands

“…Last Ｃhristmas we prepared X’s concert, so we went to eat chicken at KFC formerly, I celabrated, but now I don’t have time to do it. X’Mas in my dream is, going out to celebrate with my girlfriend. I’d drive an open-car which would be full of flowers in a black seat, to get her. I’d drive to the terrace and blow the car horn. She’d be getting ready, so I’d wait. And drive to a place where we can go sight-seeing the night view. Opening and take a bottle of champagne out… *laugh* The car must be red and flowers too… Rose is quite good. And the Frank Sinatra’s songs will be playing. Well, I’ve seen a lot of movies… *laugh*” - (c) hide, interview in X-mania
COME ON! CELEBRATION!

Hope you’ve found the best pub on Heaven and playing the guitar with the greatest rock-musicians on the Earth! ))
“… I like noise music. And Yoshiki really does like it too. Noise is all about unpleasant sounds, right? So isn’t the coolest noise music composed of the most unpleasant sounds?
Of course, it gives me goosebumps but I wonder, others would surely like it if they listened a lot, no? That’s the foundation of noise music right there. If your average person listens they’ll just hear static at first but isn’t it interesting that after a while they’ll start to like it. That’s just a human reaction *laugh*. And so isn’t it cool that you could make a sampler of your most hated sounds and if you listened to it a lot, eventually you could be wearing headphones and listening and you’d fall asleep? I won’t do that though *laugh*” - (c) hide, interview in Mugongeki ( 無言激 )
“…He can do everything if he wants to. That’s what I think about him. He appeared on the scene when I already thought of quitting music. And now he made my life an absolute mess! *laugh*” - (c) hide about Yoshiki, Teens Band No.8, May 1991
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, YOSHIKI!!
